Communication Groups & Sessions

The Communication Clinic offers a range of groups to build communication skills in a social setting. Our groups run each term and are based around a key communication challenge, such as developing social skills, tackling fussy eating, building alternate communication skills or working on expressive and receptive language.

Social Communication

Our social communication groups aim to support individual social communication goals. Our groups are made up of children and young adults in similar age brackets and with similar social communication goals. As a group, we work through common challenges and come up with individualised strategies that can be practised between sessions.

Early Communication

We offer Hanen parent training to build and develop early communication skills. Early intervention is key to supporting communication and we work with educators, families, caregivers and other professionals to deliver a child-centred approach to intervention. We offer regular parent training in a range of Hanen programs to provide a supportive learning environment for parents and caregivers.

Enjoyable Eating

Our enjoyable eating groups are designed for fussy eaters and problem feeders to take the stress and frustration out of mealtime. Working on all aspects of feeding such as the control of food, swallowing, food variety and sensory preferences, our groups provide a safe and supportive environment to explore eating challenges. Made up of children with similar eating goals, our enjoyable eating groups are led by fully-trained specialists.

Our enjoyable eating groups draw on the following programs, clinician training and individualised aspects for each group participant to match their personal goals.

  • Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Feeding Program
  • Food Chaining
  • Division of Responsibility
  • IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative)

Language - Expression & Understanding

We offer language groups and individual therapy to address receptive and expressive language delays and disorders. All our therapists are fully trained in the assessment and treatment of language difficulties using research-based assessments and interventions for children and adults.

  • Receptive language: understanding information.
  • Expressive language: being able to convey information via speech, writing & signs
  • Aphasia
  • Auditory processing disorder
  • Developmental language disorder (DLD)

Literacy

We offer literacy groups to address reading and spelling difficulties, including dyslexia, dysgraphia and other specific learning difficulties. These groups provide supportive settings for people to learn and build on their growing literacy skills and are led by therapists who are experienced in delivering researched-based interventions, including:

  • The Mulilit pre-lit program – used as the basis of our school preparation group to develop concepts and group skills essential for school starters.
  • Sounds Write – an evidence based literacy approach that supports children and adults to focus on the “initial code” or “extended code” and associated skills in small groups.
  • Talk4Writing – a comprehensive literacy and language program we use with groups where the focus is on creating written text.
